The Company of a Saint Destroys Myriads of Sins
An old deaf man regularly attended the satsanga of a saint. He suffered from neural deafness. He was as deaf as a post and couldn't hear even a single word. Somebody informed the saint, “Babaji! That old man sitting there is totally deaf even though he occasionally laughs in the course of the satsanga.”
Deaf people laugh twice – first, when all laugh in the course of satsanga and the second, when they figure out what might have transpired.
Babaji said, “Why does he come to satsanga if he is deaf? He comes every day and is always right on time. He keeps sitting for hours. He is not even among those who slip away in the middle of satsanga.”
Babaji thought, 'If he is deaf and cannot listen; how can he enjoy, and without enjoyment he should have left; but he stays put all the while!'
Babaji called the old man near and said in a loud voice into the old man's ears, “Can you listen to the satsanga?”
The old man said, “What did you say, Babaji?”
Babaji raised the loudness of his voice further and said, “Do you hear me?”
“Where do you want me to go?”
Babaji realized that he was totally deaf. He took a paper and pen from the attendant and queried the old man in writing.
The old man said, “My hearing is completely impaired. I cannot hear a word.”
The dialogue continued through the medium of written words.
“Then, why do you come to satsanga?”
“Babaji! I can not hear but I do know that God-Realized one's get absorbed in the Supreme Self before speaking. When a worldly man speaks, his words originate from the mind and the intellect; but the words of a Knower of the Supreme Brahman originate from the Atman. Of course, I cannot listen to your ambrosial words, but their pious vibrations do touch my persona. Secondly, I also earn the merit of sitting amidst the holy souls who come to listen to your nectarine precepts.”
Babaji realized that the old man was endowed with great wisdom. He said, “You may laugh twice, you are allowed to do so, but I am surprised to note that you come to satsanga right on time and take a seat in the front row; why is it so?”
“I am the eldest member of my family. The younger ones tend to follow in the footsteps of the elders. As I come to satsanga, my elder son too has started coming here. Previously, I even resorted to some tricks to bring him to the satsanga. I brought him here and he in turn brought his wife. The wife brought the children. Slowly the entire family has started coming to satsanga. The whole family is inclined to attend the satsanga.”
Never mind if the discourse on Brahman, or the satsanga of Self-Knowledge is not understood. Even if one is not able to hear, simply attending it earns one so much religious merit that sins and afflictions of his countless births are destroyed. One's entire family is also benefitted. Now, can there be any doubt that he who listens to it with rapt attention and reverence then reflects and contemplates on it constantly, will attain the Final Salvation?
